Virginia equine artist of the week
Meet Ken Wright

Ken Wright, a native of Richmond and shown here (at left) working with children, now resides with his wife Simonetta in Chesapeake. He has two grown children (Ken Jr. and Shelly) He also has a cat and one horse, Major, a Tennessee Walker. Ken is retired after 39 years as a graphic artist with The Virginian-Pilot Newspaper in Norfolk. Currently he maintains an art studio/gallery in the d'Art Center in Norfolk. Ken is an abstract painter whose work is in collections all over the world including the White House. The piece that was in the White House is now in the George W. Bush Presidential Library. The piece is titled "September 11th." Ken's claim to fame is having a painting hanging in The White House. He is one of only three African-Americans to achieve this honor. His hobbies are fishing and horseback riding. Ken's philosophy on life is to be the best example for our youth that they may see the goodness of God in him. Also, that if you don't quit, you will succeed. The best horse advice he ever received is to respect and trust your horse and he will do the same for you. People would be surprised to know that Ken was a musician in school playing the trombone and he was a drum major in the high school band. Ken's paintings may be seen in his studio in The d'Art Center at 208 E. Main St. Norfolk or by contacting him at (757) 286-1493 or e-mail at kenwrightart@verizon.net.
