Virginia equine artist of the week
Meet Pam Talley Stoneburner
Pam Talley StoneburnerBorn: Richmond, but grew up in Northern Virginia through school years.
Current residence: Waynesboro.
Family: Married to Rob Stoneburner for 25 years, two daughters and a son, ages 21-17. Oldest daughter is starting vet school at VT this fall, son is in Marine Boot Camp and youngest daughter will be a senior in high school. I am also a grandmother to my oldest daughter’s and her husband’s little girl! Rob works at Virginia Frame Builders & Supply in Fishersville, and he designs and oversees construction of horse barns. They also sell residential building supplies and pressure treated lumber.
Pets: Too many horses, chickens & cats! (But we love it.)
Horses: Mostly Arabians or Arabian crosses, plus a POA. We do trail riding, endurance racing, training young horses and beginner lessons with our horses, and I am an instructor at a local therapeutic riding stable.
Occupation: Artist/photographer/homemaker.
What is your “claim to fame”? Back in the 80’s I went to horse shows with displays of my portraits of horses and other animals. Breyer Animal Creations commissioned me to do the original sculptures for two of their models (Khemosabi and Rugged Lark). Red Mill Manufacturing Company commissioned me to do the original sculptures for about 40 of their resin sculptures. Most of their top selling sculptures were reproductions of my originals. Southern States commissioned me to do color artwork for four feed bag designs, and more recently Augusta Cooperative Farm Bureau also used my artwork on their feed bags.
Hobbies: Spending time with family and friends; horseback riding and caring for horses, cats and chickens, photography, cooking and gardening, Bible study and prayer.
Philosophy on life: I try to live by the Golden Rule of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Best horse advice ever received: Don’t let horses push you around.
What would people be surprised to learn about you? I can run like a horse doing (on all fours) walk, trot and canter, jumping, sliding stops, dressage, racking and a Walking horse canter! If I do it these days, however, I come up lame with navicular!
Where can people see your artwork? I have a website: www.pamtalleystoneburner.com. My portraits and prints hang in homes all over the world.
Is there anything you would like to add? Now that my kids are getting older, I hope to have more time to get back with doing more portraits, photography and sculpting.
This is from an original pastel done in the early 80’s, and made into posters and notecards.
